In 2020 Singapore was hit by a series of coronavirus outbreaks, centred around dormitories where thousands of migrant workers live. Cases have dropped significantly, but most of the men are still not permitted to leave except to go to work. It is one of the longest periods of Covid confinement faced by anyone anywhere in the world.
"This is prison life. This is a captive's life."
Sharif came to Singapore in 2008. At the time, his wife was pregnant and the book stall he ran in Bangladesh was shut down.
Over the past 13 years he made a life for himself here, but since early 2020 all he has known are the four walls of his dormitory and the construction site where he works.
He and nearly 300,000 others are banned from mixing with the general public. Last week, Singapore's government said it would allow a handful of workers to go out in a "pilot scheme".
"I appreciate the experiment," he says. "But I can't express much joy at this news. Workers are only allowed to go to a certain place for a fixed time."
Sharif was not one of those selected for the scheme. Sitting on the back of the lorry that takes him to work, he often catches glimpses of the city and its people, who have never been subject to the same restrictions.
"When I see everybody outside, looking happy, it's very painful for me," he told the BBC on a video call.
"They are eating out, going shopping, meeting their friends. And I think, 'why is that not me? Did I make this coronavirus?'"
Most of his spare time he spends lying on the top bunk of his bed, either talking to his family or writing prose and poetry - both in English and Bengali.
He says night time is when things are most difficult. Men often wander the corridors or try to sleep outside on the ground.
"I lie in my bed and sleep won't come. How can I sleep? I need fresh light, I need fresh oxygen," he says.
'Are we animals?'
On the first day of the pilot scheme, the BBC was invited to Singapore's Little India neighbourhood.
Fifty workers were allowed to spend four hours out of their dormitories unsupervised.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) called it a "milestone".
At one of Singapore's main Hindu temples, two men were presented to journalists.
One of them, Packrisamy Muruganantham from India, told those assembled that he was "very happy to be out" and "very grateful to the Singapore government and to the MOM for taking care of us".
Since the start of the pandemic, Singapore has reported 58 deaths out of a population of 5.7 million.
The country's success in suppressing the virus has afforded Singaporeans long periods of freedom over the past year and a half.
But even when restrictions were at their toughest and the country was locked down, no healthy person in Singapore was ever banned from leaving their home.
Socially-distanced exercise, for example, was encouraged. But not for those in the dormitories.
"The communal living and working conditions of migrant workers in dorms put them at higher risk of infection and the formation of large clusters," Singapore's Manpower Minister Dr Tan See Leng said in February.
Dr Tan declined an interview with the BBC, but in a statement a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) spokesperson said the policy of keeping workers in their dormitories was "to protect the health of our migrant workers and to mitigate the risk of further transmission".
For Sharif, it feels more like he is being punished rather than protected.
"Everybody in the community is allowed out. All these people are expected to follow the social distancing rules, but they think we cannot do this also," he says.
"When I see a law only for migrant workers I think, 'Are we not human? Or are we animals? Do we not understand anything? Are we so uneducated?'"
A wake-up call
The men in the dormitories - mostly from South Asian countries - do vital manual work here.
They build the country's roads, bridges and apartments. In return, they are able to send back good money to their families.
Tasrif - also from Bangladesh - arrived in 2017. He is 25, earns less than $750 (S$1000; £400) a month and maintains air conditioning units.
He spent around $7,500 in agency fees to come to Singapore.
"We are working tirelessly for the country," he says. "We're making everything, we're doing everything for you guys."
"We are human beings just like you, like everyone in the community. We want our dignity back."
But life in the dormitory typically means sharing a room with up to 30 people and dividing your bathroom, cooking and recreational space with hundreds more.
These conditions led to major Covid-19 outbreaks in dormitories back in March 2020. Big clusters meant Singapore went from being almost untouched by the virus to announcing an island-wide shutdown for two months.
It prompted Tommy Koh, a former Singaporean ambassador to the UN, to rebuke the government recently.
"We should use this as a wake up call," said Mr Koh. "To treat our indispensable foreign workers like a first world country should and not in the disgraceful way in which they are treated now."
But Singapore's government has always been open about separating dormitory residents from everyone else in the country.
They hold a different visa, work under different labour laws and the authorities do not pretend that these men have the same rights as other foreigners who do the white collar jobs in the city.
Even official daily case numbers for Covid-19 are split into three categories: "Imported", "Dormitory residents" and "Community".
"Community" means everyone, apart from those living in a dormitory.
The figures are stark. As of 16 September, migrant workers accounted for 74% of all recorded cases. For context, the workers make up just 5% of Singapore's total population.
Last year several media outlets reported on a spate of suicides and attempted suicides in the dormitories.
When asked by the BBC about the current situation, the MOM declined to provide any details.
Instead, they said they were "always mindful and conscious of the need to better support the mental wellbeing of our migrant workers" and that they offer counselling services and a helpline for those who need it.
Professor Jeremy Lim, director of global health at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore, says denying workers their freedom has few public health benefits at the moment.
"I would say that the Covid-19 concerns are massively overblown.
"They are vaccinated, they are familiar with safe distancing, they wear masks. So what more can we do?
"Speaking as a public health professional, we have to recognise there are limits. Right now is the time to focus on these workers' mental health because they are really, really struggling at the moment."

Chapter 54: Angor Unleashed
Becoming the Mask
I did so much unnecessary research for casual bits of narration in this chapter. So much. So unnecessary. For example, I know a lot about tiger attacks now, and this story doesn't even have a tiger in it.
Bold italics are trollish, but I'm thinking of doing away with those and just noting the language used in the narrative. Let me know what you think!
+=+
While interacting with humans in India, Walt elected to put on a more American-sounding accent. He was out of practice with it despite his station in Arcadia, but the sheer number of American tourists should keep him from standing out in anyone's memory.
He was part of a tour group in Ranthambore National Park. The Inferna Copula kept tugging at his senses. Angor Rot was somewhere in the park. From the other sensations that were echoed through the ring, Walt guessed he was in one of the ruins, which the tourists were allowed to photograph from a distance but not permitted to explore.
The tour group left the park for the city of Sawai Madhopur, where Walt parted ways with them. He napped for a few hours, and then he left his hotel room, shifted forms, and flew back to the park. It was just over eight miles back to Ranthambore's borders. He had to stop and rest once he arrived.
He'd packed lightly. His satchel had two water bottles and some troll-friendly foods, which wouldn't spoil. His money and passport were pocketed on his other form. He'd paid for his hotel room up front, so, if the staff even noticed he wasn't there the next day, they would assume he'd left early for the next tourist destination.
Ranthambore was a mix of scrubland, rocky areas, water, and dense forest. Considering Angor Rot had been here for centuries without the humans finding him, he was most likely in one of the forested areas.
With the size of the park and the inhospitality of the terrain, it could take months to search without the Inferna Copula to guide him. Walt felt a bit stupid, though, playing hot-and-cold with a magic ring. He wondered if Jim ever felt this way when trying to puzzle out what the Amulet wanted.
As he expected, the ring led him into a forest, where he landed and continued on foot.
He kept an ear out for humans – if they got close enough to hear them, he ought to shift forms, so that if he were caught, he could play the lost tourist – but for the moment he stayed in troll form. Part of the park was a tiger reserve, and they were ambush predators, so if one struck while he was human shaped, he likely wouldn't have time to shift and save himself. Stone wouldn't smell like food to them.
Tigers were also nocturnal, so that risk was substantially lower now in the daytime, and healthy tigers rarely chose to hunt humans in any case, but Walt hadn't lived as many centuries as he had by taking chances with the risk of getting eaten.
He made his way to a stone building that had possibly once been a temple. There were skulls, both troll and human, around one side of the sagging brickwork steps. The troll skulls had oversized nasal openings that looked almost like an extra eye socket, and broken off stubs that had been horns. The steps inside seemed in better shape, and rotated out of sight.
The stairs led down into a chamber at approximately a right angle to the entrance. Properly inside, the architecture looked much more trollish. Trolls seemed to love working heads into as many design elements as possible. There were grotesques high on the walls shaped like troll busts, snarling faces with forward-swept horns and clawed hands holding onto their plinths, with chains drooling out of their mouth and leading to a pile of rubble on the floor.
Actually, when Walt squinted, those busts looked unsettlingly like Gunmar …
A twisted staff was propped up beside the stones in a pile of human skulls. The Skathe-Hrün, the Pale Lady's favoured channel for shadow magic, gifted to her Champion. More skulls were scattered about the room.
Why were there so many human skulls? There weren't any other scattered bones in the room. Where was the rest of each skeleton? If they'd been eaten by trolls, it was unlikely for the skulls to be left behind. Had they been set up to try and scare humans away from accidentally freeing the assassin?
Walt took the staff and began using the forked head to lever the heavy stone bricks off the captured troll. Angor Rot's tense position might be what was keeping him from being crushed; if the chains went slack while he was still under all this weight, the shift could cause the stones to fall and do more serious damage.
When he was half-unburied, Angor Rot breathed. Walt jumped and nearly went for a knife. The chained troll tried to move, but couldn't. He had a deep, but rasping growl. Was that his natural voice or a distortion from centuries of thirst?
There was another carving shaped like a troll head on the wall which was low enough to easily reach. This one had a crest of straight, radiating horns, and a lever in its mouth. Walt set the staff down, stepped away from Angor Rot, took a deep, fortifying breath of his own, and pulled the lever.
There was a rattling sound as the chains went slack.
Angor Rot stayed on the ground for a moment. The stones shuddered from his breathing. Halting, wavering, he pushed himself to his feet. The remaining bricks on his back clunked to the ground.
"Who has awakened me?"
"I have." Walt watched the pale troll snap the manacles that had bound his arms and legs. "Angor Rot …"
"You know my name. A shame I will never know yours."
Angor Rot picked up the staff and charged with a roar. Walt threw a knife, which Angor Rot batted away in mid-air, and raised a second knife to block the strike. Golden light flashed. Angor Rot stopped mid-blow, trying and failing to push his weapon down further. It was like watching magnetic repulsion.
"My ring!" he snarled. "My flesh!"
"I had hoped we could speak like civilized trolls," said Walt, "but thought it would be prudent to have some … insurance against attack."
Angor Rot stood down, scowling. Walt saw his eye twitch.
"I'd like to make a deal with you," the Changeling continued. "I understand you once fought against Gunmar."
Angor Rot said nothing, but from the way his grip on the Skathe-Hrün twitched, Walt has surprised him.
"I'm part of group who recognize Gunmar's escape from the Darklands – or, indeed, his continued survival – would not be in our best interests. Your prowess on the battlefield is nearly unmatched. In exchange for your agreement not to attack the current Trollhunter," he raised his hand to show the ring, "I return this to your possession. If you're willing to help us further – some bodyguard work, some magical assistance – we're a resourceful lot. We'll put those resources at your disposal to find a way to restore your soul to your body."
Angor Rot's eyes narrowed.
"You don't need to decide now." Walt got a water bottle out of his satchel and took a drink, then put it on a nearby stone ledge. "Have a drink." He pulled out the most perishable of the food he was carrying, dried meat, and left most of it on the ledge as well. "Think it over on a full stomach." He bit into the piece he'd kept for himself.
It took a moment for Angor Rot to reach out, but once he got started, he ate quickly. His hands shook and he seemed to be forcing himself to pause and chew, to take sips of water instead of guzzling it down. Survival training, Walt guessed; it wasn't safe to eat too much after a period of starvation.
"Who are you?" the pale troll finally asked.
"Waltolomew Stricklander. Strickler for short. My friends call me Walt."
+=+
That was … a suspiciously human-sounding name.
Angor's golden eyes flicked to the holes in the roof, and the sunlight peeking in.
"Changeling," he growled in realization. "You expect me to believe one of your kind would turn against Gunmar?"
"Several of my kind have turned against Gunmar," said the Changeling icily. "Once another option became available."
"An alliance with the Trollhunter?" Angor guessed, based on the Changeling's earlier proposed terms of alliance. "And if the current Trollhunter does get rid of Gunmar for you, how can they trust you not to turn on them right after?"
"There would be no benefit in that. The rest of trollkind will hardly welcome us back with open arms just because we realized Gunmar is selfish and short-sighted. We need the Trollhunter's status to give us a proper opening."
"Why would the Trollhunter help you?" Angor could see one striking a deal for information, as a one-time arrangement, but not a sustained alliance.
"Let's just say he has a … personal investment."
Oh. That math wasn't difficult to add up. Angor couldn't help but snort.
"Your lover?"
The Changeling started sputtering. Angor almost chuckled. The idea sounded like something out of those melodramatic tragic sagas his cousin had loved.
"Don't be disgusting," said the Changeling. Angor not-so-idly considered testing whether a thrown knife would still be repelled by the ring's barrier. "Jim's like a son to me."
Angor had been largely cut off from his emotions since having his soul torn out, other than brief flashes of anger or amusement or disgust.
That claim … hit Angor oddly. It made him feel something. He didn't know what it made him feel but he did not like it.
Well, no wonder the Changeling – Stricklander – was desperate enough to barter with Angor Rot, of all trolls.
Trollhunters, particularly Trollhunters Angor Rot had been sent after, had notoriously short lifespans compared to the average troll.
"… You have my word, that if you return my ring, I will not attack your Trollhunter." The Changeling held his soul, what else could Angor say? If there was the slightest chance that he could truly get it back –
"Excellent."
Unexpectedly, the Changeling took off the Inferna Copula right away and set it down on the same ledge he'd been putting food and water, then took a step back, clearly inviting Angor to take it.
"You would surrender your leverage so easily?"
"I believe in opening negotiations from a position of strength," said Stricklander. "However, I'm also aware of the risks inherent in lauding one's advantages over another. An ally attained through coercion is a betrayal waiting to happen."
There was probably a lot of history behind that reasoning. Changelings were supposed to be on Gunmar's side, after all, not the Trollhunter's. (Or at least, that had been the case when Angor was first trapped here.)
Angor didn't bother to press for details.
He picked up the ring. Unworn, it didn't repel him. He put it on.
His soul was not restored.
He could feel it – he could tell it was there – but it stayed stubbornly locked away. Angor growled and clenched his fist. The Changeling backed away.
It had been too much to hope that his soul would merge back with his body just from having the ring. Angor had suspected it wouldn't be that simple. It was still a bitter disappointment to be proven right.
But it was in his hands, now. For the first time in centuries, Angor Rot was under no one's command but his own.
Angor swung his staff at the Changeling. Stricklander blocked it with a knife and pulled another one from that ridiculous collar of his. Who kept their knives in a ring around their throat?
"Just testing," Angor rumbled. For all he'd known, the Changeling had the Inferna Copula elsewhere on his person and had given Angor back a decoy. The Changeling growled at him but didn't retaliate when Angor withdrew. "Now … explain your terms for a full alliance, instead of just mutual non-interference."

Jim preferred to fight with knives, but axe training was as common as poison training at the Janus Order, since axes and sharp-bladed shovels had always been relatively common compared to swords, making them an easy weapon to hide in plain sight.
He had picked out an axe in the Hero's Forge that roughly matched Toby's – though not enough to think they'd been made for dual-wielding – and he and Toby were running drills with them while Claire and Mary sparred nearby. Darci's target practice was considerably further to the side, and facing away from the rest of them, to avoid accidents.
Blue fog wafted in.
"Hold!" called Blinky and Jim at the same time.
"But I'm winning," Mary complained.
"What's that fog?" asked Jim. "It looks like that stuff in the Void – should we get out of here?"
"Our souls are free …"
The fog went around them all. It condensed into little lights, still leaving tiny smoky trails behind them, seeming to explore the Forge.
"Floating lights – these are pixies!" cried Claire. "Cover your ears and nose!"
"We can return to our brethren …"
"Wait," said Toby. "I don't … think they've noticed us." He reached out to touch one. Jim grabbed his hand before he could. "I don't think they're hostile."
"Finally …"
"We can rest …"
"Our souls are free …"
The lights circled the patch of the floor for the Soothscryer, spinning faster and faster until it came up, and then getting sucked into its mouth.
Darci said what they were all thinking.
"What the heck was that?"
"I guess I should … follow them?" said Jim.
"I have no hypotheses at this time," said Blinky, "but I do concur with Tobias. These new spirits did not appear to be hostile. Go investigate."
The Void did not appear more populated when Jim first entered it. If anything, it seemed a little emptier, since none of the ghosts had assumed their shape from life.
"Hello?" he called.
"Jim!" Araknak's voice greeted him. "Sorry, we're all a bit distracted just now. Angor Rot's victims have been freed!"
"Who?" was Jim's well-considered and articulate way of expressing congratulations.
Kanjigar spoke up next. "Trollhunters who lost their lives and souls to Angor Rot. These souls have finally been released, and are now free to return to the Void."
"Who is Angor Rot?"
"He was a hero, once," said Araknak wistfully. "But he went questing for magic and power, and lost his soul in the process, and turned on the trolls he'd sworn to protect. He's hunted Trollhunters before –"
"And no one thought to warn me about him?"
"To consume their souls –"
"And no one thought to warn me about him?!"
"Probably to try and fill the void of losing his own; but he was trapped by his final victim and hasn't been seen for over three hundred years. I suppose he must have finally died."
"Why is there a human in the Void?" asked an unfamiliar voice.
"There isn't," said Araknak. "This is my great-great-grandson, Jim; he's the current Trollhunter."
"Just because you adopted the fleshling doesn't make him a troll," the new voice mocked.
"First, he was a troll before that. Second, by a certain use of the word 'troll', it actually does." To Jim, Araknak added, "You should probably step out while we explain things to the new arrivals." Araknak's wisp expanded into a full-sized ghost and gave Jim a gentle shove, which landed him back on the material plane.
"So what's going on?" Toby asked eagerly.
"Blinky," said Jim, "have you ever heard of a troll named 'Angor Rot'?"

Previous Chapter (Claire and Not Enrique argue about his name)

Next Chapter (The kids have a movie night)
Blinky canonically had to do some research to uncover who Angor Rot is, and we never do see him learning Angor Rot was anything but an ambitious troll who cursed himself by accident in a quest for power, so it doesn't make sense that in Season 3, Jim knew Angor used to be a hero. Here, at least, some of the Ghost Trollhunters remember it, and Jim has seen Angor’s name in a few history books he just doesn’t remember at the moment
I am not using the explanation for Angor's backstory presented in the spinoff novel Angor Reborn. In my version, Angor lost his soul before the Battle of Killahead, and was eventually imprisoned by one of the Trollhunters he was hunting, shortly before that Trollhunter died from the wounds Angor had inflicted during their fight. (This is outlined in The Epic Backstory, and yes, it will come up in the text of the story itself later.)
Angor's place of imprisonment being Ranthambore is trivia found in The Art Of Trollhunters.

Biden to allow eviction moratorium to expire Saturday (AP) The Biden administration announced Thursday it will allow a nationwide ban on evictions to expire Saturday, arguing that its hands are tied after the Supreme Court signaled the moratorium would only be extended until the end of the month. The White House said President Joe Biden would have liked to extend the federal eviction moratorium due to spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus. Instead, Biden called on “Congress to extend the eviction moratorium to protect such vulnerable renters and their families without delay.” By the end of March, 6.4 million American households were behind on their rent, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. As of July 5, roughly 3.6 million people in the U.S. said they faced eviction in the next two months, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey.
Evacuation flight brings 200 Afghans to US (AP) The first flight evacuating Afghans who worked alongside Americans in Afghanistan brought more than 200 people, including scores of children and babies in arms, to resettlement in the United States on Friday, and President Joe Biden welcomed them home. The evacuation flights, bringing out former interpreters and others who fear retaliation from Afghanistan’s Taliban for having worked with American service members and civilians, highlight American uncertainty about how Afghanistan’s government and military will fare after the last U.S. combat forces leave that country in the coming weeks. Family members are accompanying the interpreters, translators and others on the flights out. The commercial airliner carrying the 221 Afghans in the special visa program, including 57 children and 15 babies, according to an internal U.S. government document obtained by The Associated Press, touched down in Dulles, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.
Not in control (NYT) Consider these Covid-19 mysteries: In India—where the Delta variant was first identified and caused a huge outbreak—cases have plunged over the past two months. A similar drop may now be underway in Britain. There is no clear explanation for these declines. / In the U.S., cases started falling rapidly in early January. The decline began before vaccination was widespread and did not follow any evident changes in Americans’ Covid attitudes. / In March and April, the Alpha variant helped cause a sharp rise in cases in the upper Midwest and Canada. That outbreak seemed poised to spread to the rest of North America—but did not. / This spring, caseloads were not consistently higher in parts of the U.S. that had relaxed masking and social distancing measures (like Florida and Texas) than in regions that remained vigilant. / Large parts of Africa and Asia still have not experienced outbreaks as big as those in Europe, North America and South America. / How do we solve these mysteries? Michael Osterholm, who runs an infectious disease research center at the University of Minnesota, suggests that people keep in mind one overriding idea: humility. “We’ve ascribed far too much human authority over the virus,” he told me.
Diasporas at the Olympics (Foreign Policy) Cuban athletes at the Tokyo Olympics are evidence of the exodus from the island over the years. By the Cuban sports journalist Francys Romero’s count, more than 20 athletes at the Olympics were born in Cuba but became naturalized in and are now playing for other countries. That’s a group almost one-third the size of Cuba’s own delegation.
Peru’s politics (Foreign Policy) Peru’s new President Pedro Castillo chose Guido Bellido, a congressman and fellow member of his Marxist Free Peru party, as his prime minister as part of a cabinet announcement on Thursday, setting up a tense confirmation battle with the country’s opposition-led Congress. Bellido courted controversy in a local media interview in April when he expressed sympathy for members of Shining Path—a Maoist guerilla group who fought a bloody insurgency during the 1980s and 1990s.
Death toll in Turkish wildfires rises to four, blazes rage on (Reuters) The death toll from wildfires on Turkey’s southern coast has risen to four and firefighters were battling blazes for a third day on Friday after the evacuation of dozens of villages and some hotels. More than 60 wildfires have broken out across 17 provinces on Turkey’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts this week, officials have said. Villages and some hotels have been evacuated in areas popular with tourists, and TV footage had shown people fleeing across fields as they watched fires close in on their homes.
Three Jehovah’s Witnesses sentenced to six or more years in Russian prison for their faith (RNS) Three Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia were convicted and sentenced to prison for practicing their faith on Thursday (July 29). Vilen Avanesov, 68, was sentenced to six years, and his son Arsen Avanesov, 37, along with a third defendant, Aleksandr Parkov, 53, were both sentenced to six-and-a-half years. All three men have already spent more than two years in pretrial detention. “These men should never, ever have had to spend a minute in prison, and yet they’ve been locked up for two years,” said Rachel Denber, deputy director of Human Rights Watch’s Europe and Central Asia division. The three Jehovah’s Witnesses were detained in Rostov-on-Don in May 2019 and accused of continuing the operations of a Jehovah’s Witness organization that had been liquidated. All three were charged with organizing extremist activities. In January 2020, Arsen Avanesov was also accused of “financing extremist activities” by collecting donations to rent a room to meet with other Jehovah’s Witnesses. Near the trial’s conclusion, Arsen Avanesov spoke of his devotion to God: “I dedicated my life to him and did it sincerely. … I don’t want, I can’t and will not give up my promise.” The sentences for the three men are considered particularly harsh in a country where rape is punishable by three years in prison and kidnapping by five. The sentencing follows a 2017 ruling that categorizes the religious group as “extremist.”
Myanmar leaders ‘weaponizing’ COVID-19, residents say (AP) With coronavirus deaths rising in Myanmar, allegations are growing from residents and human rights activists that the military government, which seized control in February, is using the pandemic to consolidate power and crush opposition. Supplies of medical oxygen are running low, and the government has restricted its private sale in many places, saying it is trying to prevent hoarding. But that has led to widespread allegations that the stocks are being directed to government supporters and military-run hospitals. At the same time, medical workers have been targeted after spearheading a civil disobedience movement that urged professionals and civil servants not to cooperate with the government, known as the State Administrative Council. “They have stopped distributing personal protection equipment and masks, and they will not let civilians who they suspect are supporting the democracy movement be treated in hospitals, and they’re arresting doctors who support the civil disobedience movement,” said Yanghee Lee, the U.N.’s former Myanmar human rights expert and a founding member of the Special Advisory Council for Myanmar. “With the oxygen, they have banned sales to civilians or people who are not supported by the SAC, so they’re using something that can save the people against the people,” she said. “The military is weaponizing COVID.”
North Korea began the summer in a food crisis. A heat wave and drought could make it worse. (Washington Post) At the beginning of the summer, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described the country’s food situation as “tense” after border closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic and crippling floods. By midsummer, a cycle of grinding heat and record-low rainfall could be a sign of a greater food crisis and hunger ahead. Temperatures in North Korea have climbed as high as 102 degrees in some areas this week—a shock in a country where temperatures do not often break 100 degrees. The heat wave has been compounded by a growing drought. North Korea had gotten 21.2 millimeters, or less than an inch, of rain as of mid-July. It is so hot that state media reports have been repeatedly warning residents about the dangers of dehydration and low sodium levels, especially for the elderly and those at risk of heart disease or stroke. They are urging residents to stay out of the sun, eat more fruits and vegetables, and drink more than two liters (about two quarts) of water per day, according to NK News, which monitors North Korea’s state media.
Hong Kong protester given 9-year term in 1st security case (AP) A pro-democracy protester was sentenced Friday to nine years in prison in the closely watched first prosecution under Hong Kong’s national security law as the ruling Communist Party tightens control over the territory. Tong Ying-kit, 24, was convicted of inciting secession and terrorism for driving his motorcycle into a group of police officers at a July 1, 2020, rally. He carried a flag bearing the banned slogan, “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.” Tong’s sentence was longer than the three years requested by the prosecution. He faced a possible maximum of life in prison. Tong’s sentence is a “hammer blow to free speech” and shows the law is “a tool to instill terror” in government critics, Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific regional director, Yamini Mishra, said in a statement. The law “lacks any exemption for legitimate expression or protest,” Mishra said. “The judgment at no point considered Tong’s rights to freedom of expression and protest.” Defense lawyers said Tong’s penalty should be light because the court hadn’t found the attack was deliberate, no one was injured, and the secession-related offense qualified as minor under the law.
New Zealand rated best place to survive global societal collapse (Guardian) New Zealand, Iceland, the UK, Tasmania and Ireland are the places best suited to survive a global collapse of society, according to a study. The researchers said human civilisation was “in a perilous state” due to the highly interconnected and energy-intensive society that had developed and the environmental damage this had caused. A collapse could arise from shocks, such as a severe financial crisis, the impacts of the climate crisis, destruction of nature, an even worse pandemic than Covid-19 or a combination of these, the scientists said. To assess which nations would be most resilient to such a collapse, countries were ranked according to their ability to grow food for their population, protect their borders from unwanted mass migration, and maintain an electrical grid and some manufacturing ability. Islands in temperate regions and mostly with low population densities came out on top.
Ethiopian roadblock (NYT) Aid workers in Ethiopia claim that an unofficial Ethiopian government blockade has cut off the only road into the conflict-torn region where millions of Ethiopians face the threat of mass starvation. A relief convoy headed for Tigray came under fire on the road on July 18, forcing it to turn around. On Tuesday, the World Food Program said 170 trucks loaded with relief aid were stranded in Semera, the capital of the neighboring Afar region, waiting for Ethiopian permission to make the trek into Tigray. The blockade is intensifying what some call the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in a decade. The crisis comes during an intensifying war, which has deepened ethnic tensions and stoked fears that Ethiopia will collapse. The United Nations estimates that 400,000 people there are living in famine-like conditions, and another 4.8 million need urgent help. The Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, who won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, said last week that his government was providing “unfettered humanitarian access” and committed to “the safe delivery of critical supplies to its people in the Tigray region.” However, Mr. Abiy’s ministers have publicly accused aid workers of helping and even arming the Tigrayan fighters, leading to aid workers being attacked at airports, and even killed.

Are health care workers are at high risk of catching COVID-19?
While most people are at home with their family members, in quarantine, the healthcare workers are battling it out in the front lines and trying to limit the wide range of the disease.
In the USA alone in the last month the hospital provided care to 900 people with respiratory diseases; 400 have been hospitalized by COVID-19 and 162 have been discharged.
Among 2,035,395 community individuals and 99,795 frontline healthcare workers, 5,545 new reports of a positive COVID-19 test were documented. Compared with the general community, frontline healthcare workers had an 11.6-times.
Healthcare workers (HCWs) are not only at higher risk of infection but can also amplify outbreaks within healthcare facilities if they become ill. Identifying and managing HCWs who have been exposed to a patient with COVID-19 is of great importance in preventing healthcare transmission and protecting staff and vulnerable patients in healthcare settings.
Shortage of health care providers
Even in normal times, India has abysmal levels of healthcare coverage. According to norms published by the World Health Organisation, there should be a minimum of 44.5 health workers – doctors, nurses and midwives – per 10,000 people. India, however, has only 20.6 health workers per 10,000 people – less than half of the WHO’s minimum recommended standard.
The extreme shortage of personnel is not surprising. India’s spending on health is among the lowest in the world. Total government expenditure – state and Union – amounted to just 1.29% of GDP in 2019-’20.
PPE shortage
In the first half of 2020, hospitals have been ordering PPE at an unprecedented rate. GlobalData’s analysis of hospital purchasing data in the US alone indicates an impressive 94 million 3M respirators purchased during Q1 2020. It was also apparent however that not all hospitals had been increasing their purchases of PPE equally, particularly for N95 and isolation gowns respirators.
This has led to an acute shortage of the PPE kits. But shortages are leaving doctors, nurses and other frontline workers dangerously ill-equipped to care for COVID-19 patients, due to limited access to supplies such as gloves, medical masks, respirators, goggles, face shields, gowns, and aprons. This shortage is majorly for two reasons :
o The shortage of raw materials
o The strict control on quality measures that have to be maintained
o Some governments have banned the export of these kits.
Healthcare workers falling prey to COVID-19
Due to the continual exposure to the disease the healthcare providers are also falling prey to the deadly pandemic. Ideally, HCWs who had a high-risk exposure should be restricted from work and remain quarantined with active monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after the date of last exposure. If at any time the worker develops fever or symptoms, they should undergo medical evaluation and COVID-19 testing, if indicated. Those who test negative should continue to be restricted from work, actively monitored, and may return to work at the end of the monitoring period if symptoms are resolved. Those HCWs who remain asymptomatic over the monitoring period may likewise return to work after 14 days.
What can the common people do to help the healthcare industry
In the light of such an atrocity in the society the here are a few steps the by 3MEDS Best healthcare service provider in India, suggests a few ways to help the healthcare providers:
1. Stay at home
Flattening the curve is one of the major intentions of the health care industry in every country, this can only be arranged if the people observe the rules of quarantine and stay at home, so that they are at minimum risk of contacting the disease.
2. Do not rush into a hospital or dispensary
Avoid running into a hospital or dispensary without prior notice. Call a doctor or the emergency of the nearest hospital if you need to get a test done or a check up. In this they can be prepared and minimize the risk factors
3. Know when to get a test done
Common symptoms:
o Fever
o Dry throat
o tiredness
o Less common symptoms:
o aches and pains
o sore throat
o diarrhoea
o conjunctivitis
o headache
o loss of taste or smell
o a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes
Serious symptoms:
o difficulty or shortness of breath
o Chest pain
o Loss of speech or movement
4. Make donations
Getting a “wish list” directly from hospitals, although this is what hospitals need most right now:
o Surgical masks
o N95 respirators
o Face/eye shields
o Gloves
o Cleaning supplies
o Hand sanitizers
o Viral testing swabs
Make monetary funds to non profit organizations.
5. Sew more masks
If you are capable, make more masks and supply them as amply as is needed to be done. Making this mask is fairly easy and there are several tutorials on the internet
6. Run essential errands for high risk people
If you know someone nearby who is considered high-risk, lend them a helping hand. Do their grocery shopping or whatever else you can do to ensure they stay home.
7. Inspire the healthcare providers with inspiring messages
Find opportunities to amplify positive and hopeful stories and positive images of local people who have experienced COVID-19. For example, stories of people who have recovered or who have supported a loved one and are willing to share their experience. Honour carers and healthcare workers supporting people affected with COVID-19 in your community. Acknowledge the role they play in saving lives and keeping your loved ones safe.
COVID-19 is a deadly pandemic but the surrounding stigma around it does not help it in any. So we need to rise against the disease but not against the people who suffer from it.

Scorching spots and zones
To comprise coronavirus successfully, the federal government has demarcated the nation into three zones — crimson, orange and inexperienced. There are extra coronavirus instances in western area than the japanese area.
There are extra crimson zones in affluent states, like Maharashtra, than states significantly much less superior, like Bihar and Odisha. The variety of instances in metros, like Mumbai and Delhi, is greater than smaller cities in the japanese area.
In Maharashtra, there are 14 crimson, 16 orange and 6 inexperienced zones. In Bihar, there are 5 crimson, 20 orange and 13 inexperienced zones. There are 130 crimson, 284 orange and 319 inexperienced zones in the nation, in keeping with the letter written by Well being Secretary Preeti Sudan to the state secretaries on April 30.
Explaining these zones, the federal government mentioned the inexperienced zones comprised districts with both zero confirmed case or no confirmed case in the final 21 days. The classification of districts as crimson zones takes into consideration variety of energetic instances, doubling rate of confirmed instances, extent of testing and surveillance suggestions from there. The districts, that are neither outlined as crimson nor inexperienced, are labeled as orange zones.

Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Well being Basis of India (PHFI), mentioned, “The pattern reflects difference in economic development, indicated by the size of the international airports, number of international and domestic flights operating from those airports, foreign-returned travellers arriving and spreading out from there.”
“Western India is more urbanised, with greater mobility of people with whom the virus hitch hikes to spread fast. Eastern India has lower foreign returnees to initiate the spread,” Reddy mentioned.
Based on him, the agricultural India has much less mobility. “This too has protected eastern parts. That’s why the more urbanised western countries too have seen a rapid spread. Similar phenomenon in India has occurred,” he mentioned.
Dr Manoj Goel, Director (Pulmonology), at Fortis Memorial Analysis Institute, informed IANS attributed this distribution of an infection to the inhabitants density in totally different components of India.
“India is a large country. It’s like a subcontinent with over 17 per cent of the world population. So there is likely to be no uniformity in distribution of cases in the different regions,” he mentioned.
Stating that the densely populated locations in the west are the worst hit, he mentioned, “Dense population makes it difficult for the virus to contain as social distancing can be difficult to manage. The states with large number of immigrants from abroad could also been witnessing more Covid-19 cases.”
The federal government has mentioned the classification of districts into crimson, inexperienced and orange zones can be shared by the MoHFW with states and Union Territories on a weekly foundation, or earlier, as required.
Whereas states and UTs can embrace extra districts in the crimson and orange zones, they could not decrease the classification of a district included by the MoHFW.

The whole Raizaada family was in Lucknow for the week. Arnav and Khushi would join them on the weekend and spend the next week there with everyone reason being Arnav had to attend a party to commemorate the beginning of a new joint venture between AR Group and Vadia Textiles. Khushi would accompany Arnav to the function as this was required being the wife of the business magnate. The relationship between Khushi and Arnav was still strained but for the last 5months Arnav had been busy trying to close this deal so they saw very little of each other. Khushi was forlorn and defeated. Her time as Mrs Khushi Arnav Singh Raizaada was coming to an end. She had no idea where her life would take her after that but she knew that when she finally walks out of Raizaada mansion, her heart will be left behind. She had lost her heart along the way to the very man who demeaned her, who snatched her dreams and wishes of love and family away from her, the man who isolated her from pursuing her ambitions, and ridiculed her existence. But she loved him none the less. She always trusted in her Devi Maiya that things would work out in the end, that he would open up to her. Every so often she would see a glimmer of hope when he would touch her, or look at her with such tenderness and affection as opposed to the brutality of his words and actions. He was a master at masking his emotions with everyone but Khushi knew that deep down, he was hurt and pained by his past and now by her. Though the reason why he felt that she had wronged him were still not known to her ' she vowed that she would make him happy again even if it meant losing everything, losing her love she would ensure that he was happy. But as the days to her departure neared, Khushi knew that she could not live up to the vow that she took. She had let him down. Arnav arrived early from work that day. He announced his arrival in an impatient tone telling her to get ready as they have to go shopping for the evening. Khushi insisted that she didn't need a new outfit, she would just borrow one of her Jiji's but Arnav insisted. She knew better than to argue so after half an hour they left. They arrived at the shopping centre and were ushered into a designer store by 3 eager assistants. They picked out numerous outfits for Khushi but she was least interested in any of them. Instead she walked over to the bottom shelf and picked out a green simple sari with a conservative blouse. This sari paled in comparison to the other outfits but Khushi insisted because it was a fraction of the price. Arnav sensing the reason for her choice ignored her choice and asked the assistants to pack a deep red sari that hung on one of the mannequins. The sari was simple yet elegant and Arnav knew that Khushi would be comfortable in it. They then went on to a jewellery boutique and again Arnav picked out an exquisite necklace with matching earrings. The design was not overbearing but everything about it held class. Khushi looked on in awe at Arnav as he selected the set thinking how much her husband knew her and her taste. After another hour of shopping around for Arnav who decided he needed to wear a matching tie and hanky to his beautiful wife they left. Arnav dropped Khushi home and said that she should get ready; he had some errands to run and would be back in a while. Khushi was ready and waiting. She looked at herself in the mirror and thought that her husband has exceptional taste. She put her hair up in a loose bun with a few curls falling on her face. Her makeup was minimal and she was happy with the end result. She could feel a pair of eyes on her and she felt her skin burn from the intensity. Arnav stood speechless at the doorway entranced by his wife's beauty. She was the picture of perfection, her flawless complexion contrasted with the deep shade of her net sari and Arnav could not help but to look her up and down. Khushi stood up, nervous and tense as the reflection of his eyes in the mirror had turned dark. There was an emotion, a need in these eyes that she had never seen before. He walked up to her slowly and lifted his hand to move a curl away from her face. There was no denying that she was the most beautiful being that he had ever laid eyes on. He slowly proceeded to pull out a box from his pocket and remove a tennis bracelet which he adorned on her wrist. He gently caressed her wrist as he did so and Khushi could feel the desire that burned in his eyes. She turned around shyly. When she turned back, Arnav had disappeared into the bathroom. Dammit he thought. Why does she make me feel so weak? Why do I still want her despite everything I know about her? How can I allow myself to be manipulated by her look of innocence? It is all just an act by her so why do I care so much. After taking a cold shower Arnav walked out looking dashing in his black Armani suit. He took one last look in the mirror and happy with every strand of hair in place, he was ready to leave. Khushi caught hold of his hand taking Arnav by surprise. He turned around ready to unleash all his pent up frustration on her when she lifted her hand and gifted him a little black box with a silver ribbon. Arnav was taken aback. He did not take the gift from her. Khushi opened the box and removed a pair of cufflinks. She said that she had bought them a while ago with the money that she saved from her dabba service but she never got a chance to give them to him. He continued to stare at her and the cufflinks thinking this must have cost her a small fortune. Why would she save her money to buy me a gift he thought? Hi thoughts were disrupted when he felt a tug at his sleeves and Khushi continued to fasten the cufflinks on. While doing so, Arnav's eyes were fixated on her. He was so confused. Her actions were not consistent with what he expected from someone who was forced to stay with someone against her wishes, she did not seem to be calculative to manipulate the situation or to be in love with a married man. He eventually brushed all his thoughts aside thinking this will all be over in another month. They eventually left for the party. They rode in silence to the party. Each one lost in thoughts of the other. The car comes to a grinding halt as there are reporters running across the road trying to get pictures of the infamous Arnav Singh Raizaada and the new Mrs ASR. Arnav and Khushi snap out of their thoughts and look at each other. Arnav: Take my lead Khushi and call me Arnav. Please drop th"ji" Khushi just nods her head. The driver comes around and opens the door. Arnav steps out and takes a deep breath. He sighs ' let the pretence begin. He graciously extends his hand to assist his wife out. The media are in frenzy. All trying to capture their perfect shot of the women who now lays claim to the most desirable bachelor in India. Khushi slowly makes her way out and stands smiling next to her husband. Arnav snakes his left hand around her back keeping her very close to him protectively. They smile and pose for the media. Microphones are being shoved in their faces; security guards are trying to keep everyone at bay. Arnavs personal bodyguards stand ahead of them while two are at the back ready to escort the couple inside. Arnav pulls the mic of one of the reporters and says: Thank you all for allowing my wife and me the privacy we requested following our marriage. Ladies and gentlemen I present to you my wife, Mrs Khushi Arnav Singh Raizaada. Everyone is busy snapping away, flashes everywhere but Khushi is just looking at her husband ' the love evident in her eyes. He leans in and gives her a lingering kiss on her cheek and then ushers her inside. Khushi was amazed at the warm reception that awaited them. For the first time she fully realized the power that her husband commanded and understood what the big deal was about being called the wife of ASR. At first she was nervous looking around at all the attention that was coming their way but as always Khushi's cheerfulness had returned. Arnav was amazed at how confidently Khushi spoke to his associates, many of whom had the same character traits as Arnav so very few dared to even look them in the eye, let alone crack jokes with them. But everyone enjoyed her company, her jokes and her infectious smile. She had won over everyone with her anecdotes and Arnav realised that Khushi was so much more than what he had interpreted her to be. They moved from circle to circle of people talking and sharing stories. He was really enjoying showing her off and accepting everyone's compliments and praises on her beauty. Finally she was whisked away by a group of women who were the wives of some of his acquaintances. He recognised many of them from other social events and groaned ' these tennis club wives. Suddenly Arnav realised he wasn't enjoying the party anymore. His arm seemed bare because she was no longer wrapped in it. He positioned himself so that he has a clear view of his Khushi. He was mesmerised by her beauty and her innocence. She looked so gorgeous ' the picture of femininity in her sari. He watched her in amusement as she entertained the women with her expressions. He was loving this side of Khushi who mingled and bowled everyone over. He looked around the hall and she seemed to be having a jolly good time with the women. For someone who was not accustomed to this lifestyle ' she definitely took to it all very easily. Just another thing he had misjudged her on. He could not help but think of their life together ' what could have been. If only she was truly his. Around 12:00 Arnav looked around for Khushi to enquire if she would like to leave. He searched everywhere for her and decided to check the outside deck. And there she was'an angel whose beauty was further enhanced by the dancing candle lights. He walked over to her and gave her a peck on the cheek before excusing himself and his wife from the group of people. Still holding on to her hand he led her to a secluded spot. She loved the way he was treating her with so much affection but she knew that this was for everyone's benefit and pretence. But she let him because she wanted this night to be perfect for her husband. He looked deeply into her eyes and he was lost in her. As if on cue the song changed to Teri Meri and he found himself leading her hand to his shoulder. His hands in turn wound around her waist. They were both taken to another time, an understanding on both their faces as they drowned in the flashbacks of the sangeeth dance. Arnav gently pulled her closer so that their bodies were touching. He could feel her heaving breasts on his chest and the dhak dhak of her heart echoed his own. Hi gently leaned forward and captured her lips. Khushi was surprised by his display of affection but this felt real. He started kissing her slowly, abit apprehensive at first but when he found her reciprocating the kiss he deepened it. They stood kissing each other, completely lost in each other, unaware of the crowd they were now attracting. Suddenly there was whistling and cheering and they both pulled apart slightly embarrassed. They leave the party. Silence on the way home. Both reliving the kiss. Both confused by the others action and reaction. They reach Raizaada Mansion and enter the house. Khushi is adamant that today she will get her answers to all the questions. She stops abruptly and turns around. Arnav, without thinking grabs her and kisses her passionately. Khushi kisses him back just as hungrily. Arnav lifts Khushi and carries her up the stairs all the time looking straight into her eyes. Khushi is nervous but at the same time excited. Arnav puts her down in the hallway outside their room and continues ravishing her. His hands roam all over her back sending different sensations through Khushi. She has never experienced this before and is revelling in what his hands are doing to her body. She takes his lead and grabs his hair while pushing herself further into him. Arnav fumbles and opens the door to his bedroom all the while still kissing her passionately. They enter the room and shut the door. Arnav pushes her against the door and unbuttons his blazer. He flings it behind him closely followed by his tie. Khushi's hands are nervously opening his buttons. They come apart for air and Arnav turns around to compose himself. Khushi is hurt and still standing rooted to her spot. Arnav tries to compel his mind and certain parts of his body that she loves someone else but his heart desires her and only her. He turns back to her and sees her eyes dark with desire. Her hair dishevelled and yet still as gorgeous. She looked innocently at him and asked if she did something wrong and if she did that she was truly sorry. Her eyes became moist and a tear escaped her eyelids. Arnav reached to her eyes and gently brushed the tear away trying to assure her that it was not her. On the contrary what she did to him was driving him wild with a passion that he had never experienced with anyone else. Khushi literally flew into his arms and kissed him. Arnav was shocked at this bold move but loved her innocent seduction of him. He pulled his shirt over his head and stood bare chested. Khushi ran her hand up and down his hard chest and arms. She always felt protected in his arms and tonight was no different. She knew that Arnav would always protect her. Her kissed her and nibbled her lips. His tongue danced with hers. She tasted so sweet and her fragrance was intoxicating. He pulled her pallu out with one swift motion and his hands creating havoc on her stomach. He turned her around and kissed her neck, wet and hungry kisses. Next was her earlobe which he gently bit on and then with his teeth he undid the knot at the back of her blouse that held it all together. She swiftly removed the blouse from her hands and they continued kissing each other. He cupped her breasts through her bra and placed a kiss over it. Khushi was squirming in his arms and wanted him to come back to her lips. He gladly obliged his wife. Her moans were getting deeper as she felt a new sensation between her legs. She was flushed and felt hot. Arnav's hand reached to unclasp her bra and immediately Khushi broke the kiss and moved her hands to her chest. She turned around. Arnav knew that she was shy. He went behind her and cupped her hands which were covering her breasts from the back. He continued to kiss her neck and take in the fragrance of her hair. He was moving against her and Khushi could feel his hardness just above her butt. She slowly lost herself in him again and let her hands fall. Arnav massaged her from the back and played with her nipples till they were taught and ready for him. She turns swiftly in his arms still adorned in her underskirt. With one pull of the string it came falling to the ground. Arnav could not believe the sight that his wife made. He looked her from head to toe making Khusi nervous and she lunged into him. He clasped his hands around her and gave her a reassuring hug. He slowly moved his hand down to her panties and rubbed her front. He could feel the heat and the wetness though the small piece of cloth that was obstructing his access. He continued to kiss her on her lips, and then he moved to her neck and collar bone. His tongue darted out and travelled the valley between her breasts. He covered her one breast with his mouth, sucking and nibbling while his hand squeezed the other breast. Khushi was moaning and calling out his name. Her breath was ragged and her back arched giving him more of her full breast. After giving her breasts their due attention he moved further down to her stomach. His hands still moving swiftly around her waist and up to her breast while his mouth continued to ravish her belly. He then proceeded to pull down her panty and helped her remove it over her high heeled shoe. Khushi pulled him back up to her lips and he continued to kiss her deeply like he could not satiate his hunger of her. While doing so his hand gripped to the back of her hair, he ran his other hand up and down her back making Khushi shiver slightly. He fondled her breasts again and again each time with more force. Khushi was crying out his name in want and ripping her nails into his back. He pushed her slightly till be back was against the door again. He grabbed her hands and pulled them above her head and continued his passionate kissing and licking. He positioned his Knee in between her legs and gradually nudged them apart. Once satisfied that he had covered every bit of flesh from her upper half of her body he licked his way down till he was inches apart from her feminine core. He started to kiss her there and he felt her body tense up. He looked up at her and said trust me, You will love this. And I am going to have a feast here. Khushi eased her legs apart again. Arnav started of slowly kissing her and with his fingers moved her lips apart. He then proceed to make love to her core. Khushi had never knew this kind of pleasure existed and she went wild with passion. She tugged at his hair and commanded he go deeper. He gladly obliged and loved what she tasted like. She screamed out his name in pleasure urging him to take her in his mouth harder and deeper. She then begged for him to stop as she could not handle the pleasure that ran through her core. With her hand gripped in his hair she urged him to come up. He kissed her making her taste herself. While kissing her, her ran his hand back down to her feminine part and thrust one finger slightly inside her to give her a feel of what was to come. She loved it and tried to push against his finger to deepen the insertion but her told her to be patient. He rubbed her c***s and she felt another wave of pleasure as a release came. Arnav went back down to lick it all up. She was loving the feeling of his tight tongue running up and down her c***s. He then proceeded to carry her to their bed and placed her down. He positioned himself on top of her and whilst kissing her passionately, he lowered himself into her. Her juices were flowing which helped him glide in. He teased her like this for a while until she screamed out Pllleaasee Arnav nooowww. The passion was still very much evident but the animalistic instinct in Arnav had died down. He wanted to make love to his love and in doing so hope that she will understand how he feels about her and that this is not him trying to fulfil his manly needs. As he lowered into her further, he realised there was a little resistance. He immediately pulled out and looked at Khushi with so much of love that she was giving herself to him. But why ' he could not understand. Didn't Shyam tell him that he had been intimate with Khushi? So then that was a lie! Arnav was ecstatic'maybe she did love only him and he was wrong. He was interrupted when Khushi expressed her disappointment that he had stopped. He looked at her with tenderness and love and asked her if she was sure that she wanted to do this. She simply nodded. And he proceeded to make love to her again and again that night, each time filling her with a part of him. In the early hours of the morning, they both fell into a peaceful sleep, bodies entwined and souls united. Written by : AshM It was around 9am when Khushi awoke with a smile playing on her lips. She felt complete for the first time in her life and happy'something she hadn't felt in a long time. She turned to her side to see her husband but he was not there. She was disappointed and grudgingly picked herself up and went to shower and change. Outside; Arnav was typing away on his laptop, with a content smile worn on his face. Images of their previous night of passion flashed in his mind. The way she cried out his name in pleasure, the want and desire in her eyes and their vehement lovemaking made him smirk, but above all this the one thing that he will not forget from their night together was after all the lovemaking, a wasted Khushi put her head on his arm, moulded herself into him and whispered "I love you Arnav now and always." The smile was soon replace by guilt ' guilt for having doubted Khushi, for having made her life hell and robbed her of everything that she deemed precious. The images of a crying Khushi made Arnav hate himself. The disgusting words that he had spewed out at her time and again and the physical hurt that he had subjected her to would never allow him to bask in the glory of their new found love. Arnav had realised that he had made a huge mistake and that if Khushi found out ' she would never forgive him. After everything that he had put her through, he couldn't expect her to tolerate such a huge deceit. He was losing perspective of things'lies and truth blurred and blended in his mind. He was up since 6 trying to figure things out, trying to think rationally and methodically but all he could see was the pain in Khushi's eyes if she ever found out the reason he married her. Of all the hurtful things he had done to her, he knew that this one truth would shatter her and any hope of a future together. But he loved her enough to be honest with her and risk losing her. She deserved the truth ' she always had. He was just a coward who never told her in fear that she confirmed everything. He needed to get to the bottom of all this deceit that threatened to destroy the entire Raizaada family and cause him to lose his love. Only one name came to mind ' Ajay. They were friends since Arnav had first moved to Delhi. Ajay was in the police force and used to patrol the neighbourhood in which Arnav lived with his Nani. Ajay had been protective of Arnav and regarded him as a little brother. If Arnav were to be honest with himself Ajay was the only friend he has ever had who was not with him because he is the mighty and powerful ASR. He phoned his friend and asked him to find out everything there is concerning Shyam Manohar Jha. He knew his friend was discreet and would get him the answers he desperately needed. He could not risk Shyam suspecting that someone was enquiring about him. Khushi came out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her. Arnav saw her stretch and try to reach into the cupboard for something. The towel came lose and fell to the floor. Arnav stared at his wife wondering how someone could be so beautiful inside and out. She bent down to pick up the towel and her butt stuck out for Arnav to glare at. He wanted so much to walk in and have his way with her, to pleasure her the way he did last night and to spend the rest of their day whispering sweet nothings to each other and making love. But he knew that it would be wrong. He needs to be honest with her first. Taking a deep breath Arnav turned his back to her. He waited for 10 minutes till he was sure that she was fully clothed and then he went in. Khushi: Arnav where were you. Arnav: I needed to sort a few things out. Khushi: Are you ok. You look tense and a bit distant. Arnav didn't have it in him to face her lest she see the guilt in his eyes. Khushi: Do you regret what happened between us last night? Arnav did not know how to respond to this. He wanted to take her in his arms and tell her that it was the most beautiful experience of his life, and he would treasure the moment they became one forever no matter what happens, but all he could muster was a shake of his head. Khushi was not convinced. She went to him and hugged him from behind. I love you Arnav. If anything should ever come between us ' I want you to know that I have always loved you and only you. Arnav turn and hugged her, hiding his face in her hair. He decided that he would have to come clean with Khushi and face her wrath. He told Khushi that they needed to have a serious talk. Khushi agreed but insisted that they have breakfast first. She walked to her dressing table and carefully applied her sindoor. She then proceeded to put on her Mangalsutra which she touched with love and pride. This did not go unnoticed by Arnav and he felt the guilt double up. After breakfast they went to the poolside. Arnav grabbed a chair and took a seat in front of Khushi. Arnav: Khushi ' I need tell you something. I know that you will be hurt and may even hate me but I need to tell you this. You deserve to know the truth about everything. Khushi cupped Arnav's face in her palms and looked deep into his eyes piercing his soul. After a long time she said very plainly ' I don't need to know. Arnav: Khushi ' you deserve this and so much more. Please let me tell you everything and then you are free to take whatever decision you want. I will not stop you today. The reason I married you was' Khushi: Arnav do you love me? Arnav: more than anything in this world. Khushi: then I don't need to know. Whatever it is, whatever your reason for not telling me or reason for marrying me was, it's all irrelevant now. I see the repentance and regret in your eyes; the pain and anguish but I also see the love and the purity of your heart. I do not want to know anything else. Let's forget the past and concentrate on the future together. We've both made mistakes ' but if we are together and have faith in our love, then we can overcome any obstacle. With that Khushi leaned forward and kissed her husband on the lips. A kiss so tender and full of promise; hope and adoration. Arnav returned the kiss with equal affection. He looked up and for the first time in 10 years said a silent prayer to God for gifting him the most precious angel and vowed to make it up to his wife every day and to never hurt his delicate angel ever again. Khushi looked at Arnav and with hesitation said' I want to spend this week with you. Would you mind if we didn't go to Lucknow? Arnav: Anything for my love. He immediately dialled Anjali and said that they would not be coming as he wanted to spend some alone time with his wife. He half expected her to blow her top off but instead she commended him on trying to be a better husband to Khushi. After having hung up the phone ' he asked: What does the lovely Mrs Raizaada want to do today? Khushi gave him a mischievous smile and leaned forward and nuzzled his neck, and then she whispered in his ear' Arnav was scandalised by his innocent wife's thoughts. He held out his hand and she immediately took it. They walked into the room and Arnav dropped his pants and removed his shirt. Standing there in his boxers he announced that he was ready. Khushi eyed him intently and then folded her arms with irritation. It's so easy for you but what about me. What will I use? Arnav: Oh ho. Why don't you remove your clothes as well? It's just the two of us here remember. The Prakash brothers have been given leave for the next week so it's just you and me baby. He walked over to her and started to undress her slowly, his eyes fixated on her, watching every emotion flint across her eyes. He removed her sari, then her blouse and finally her underskirt. He led her back outside to the pool and went inside first. The water was warm and to his liking so he gave her his hand, he gently pulled her in. He started to kiss her and he poured all the love that he felt for her in that kiss. Khushi broke the kiss and pushed him back. The surprise caused him to lose balance and he fell into the pool. Khushi giggled at the sight. Arnav, not being one to take things lying down, grabbed her and pulled her down as well. They both came up for air after a while. Arnav lovingly moved her wet hair from her face to one side and gently caressed her face tracing a water droplet down her neck. Her then leaned in and kissed her hard causing her to hold on to him tightly else she would lose her footing in the pool. They continued to playfully splash water on each other, kissing and teasing each other. Arnav left Khushi standing in the middle of the pool and went under water. He removed her underwear and came back up smirking at her. Obviously Khushi had to retaliate so she copied the same and came back up with his boxers. She flung it to the other end of the pool. Arnav now completely aware of his constricting lower parts moved closer to Khushi. Her laugh immediately seized as she felt something hard brush against her stomach. She attempted to move back but her every step was matched by Arnav until she hit the inside wall of the pool. Arnav smirked as he closed the gap and took her lips with such ferocity that Khushi immediately felt her knees weaken. Arnav held on to her continuing his assault on her lips. Their tongues teased each other and then Arnav lifted her up and placed her on the edge of the pool in a seating position. Still standing inside the pool, he moved her legs apart and leaned in to nibble at her core, savouring the taste of her. With one hand holding her back for support, he continued to devour her. While flicking at her c***s with his tongue, he brought up his other hand and inserted two fingers into her leisurely. Khushi wanted him to be more aggressive and take his finger deeper. Arnav picked up the pace with which he was fingering her and he went in deeper each time. Finally he reached her spot and he moved his fingers around inside making her moan louder with pleasure. Khushi screamed out his name over and over. "Right there Arnav" she screamed as she trembled and erupted on his fingers. He then gently made her lie back on the ground, her legs still dwindling in the water. He stretched her legs wider giving him a full view of her pulsating centre. He then gently lifted her legs and placed them over his shoulders, his face level with her femininity and he thrust his tongue in and out of her replicating the action the he would soon be doing with his hard manhood. She moaned loudly and tightened her legs around his shoulder until another release erupted causing he to unwind her legs. She sat up again and slid back into the pool. Placing her hands behind her back she undid the clasp on her bra. She took his hand in hers and placed them on her breasts and guided him in circular motions massaging her. Her hands left his and made its way to his erect penis. She gently glided her hand through the length of him and felt him harden further. He moaned and lifted her up. She automatically wound her legs around his waist. With one swift motion he thrust into her. Her hips moved in sync with his thrusts and both were screaming in ecstasy. He picked up the pace and found release deep within her. Completely spent, he lowered her and leaned on her. He placed a kiss on the side of her neck and softly whispered ' I love you Khushi, to which she replied ' I love you too Arnav.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Honor 8C is the first phone powered by the Snapdragon 632 SoC
While battery life is solid, the cameras are underwhelming
Honor 8C is priced starting at Rs. 11,999
Huawei's sub-brand Honor has been very aggressive in India of late, with numerous smartphone launches across multiple price segments. The Honor 8C arrives just six months after the Honor 7C, and features a sizeable 4,000mAh battery, an expansive 6.26-inch display with an aspect ratio of 19:9, AI-enhanced cameras, and Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. The first phone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC under its hood, the Honor 8C is offered in two variants: one with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage priced at Rs. 11,999, and the one we have on hand, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which retails for Rs 12,999.
The Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 segment is incredibly cut-throat and is populated by capable smartphone such as the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1₹ 8,199 (Review), Nokia 5.1 Plus₹ 10,999 (Review), Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro₹ 10,999 (Review), and Realme 1 (Review). Let's see if the Honor 8C can compete with such heavy hitters.
Honor 8C design
The body of the Honor 8C is all plastic and the build quality is satisfactory, but this smartphone does not feel as premium as its glass- and metal-backed rivals. In fact, even the older Honor 7C (Review) has a metal backplate with plastic inserts on the top and bottom.
This phone is also a bit too tall to be used comfortably with one hand. The notched display is not exactly borderless, and the chin is pretty significant. There is an option in the settings menu to mask the notch, which basically darkens the screen area on either side of it. Users can choose between on-screen buttons and EMUI's gestures, which we found to be slightly difficult to use.
The glossy plastic back attracts a ton of fingerprints and makes the phone very slippery. A soft TPU case is included in the box. It's not of the highest quality, but does help protect the phone from scratches and improve grip. The retail box also includes a 10W charger and a Micro-USB cable. A headset is not included, which might disappoint a few users.
The rear panel houses the vertically stacked cameras and a centrally located fingerprint sensor. Honor has tried to replicate the color gradient used on its pricier glass-backed offerings such as the Honor 10₹ 24,999 (Review), but hasn't succeeded fully. The black and blue gradient on the back of our review unit looked a little garish to us.
The left of the smartphone houses the SIM tray, which has two Nano-SIM slots and a dedicated microSD card slot. The right side is home to the power button and volume rocker, both of which are small but tactile. On the bottom of the phone is a Micro-USB port, flanked by the primary microphone and a speaker that is loud but tinny. The secondary microphone and 3.5mm headphone jack are placed on the top. The use of a Micro-USB port is a disappointing at a time when the industry has started transitioning to the USB Type-C standard.
Honor 8C specifications and display
The Honor 8C is powered by Qualcomm's new 14nm Snapdragon 632 SoC, which has four high-performance cores and four cores tuned for power efficiency. The review unit we tested was the top-end variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, priced at Rs.12,999. A cheaper variant with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage is also offered, which has been priced at Rs. 11,999. Both support storage expansion via a microSD card (up to 256GB).
The smartphone has a sizeable 4,000mAh battery and runs EMUI 8.2 atop Android 8.1 Oreo. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS, a Micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It supports dual SIMs (Nano) and both can simultaneously latch onto 4G networks.
There's a 6.26-inch HD+ (720x1520 pixels) TFT IPS LCD panel up front with an aspect ratio of 19:9. The display is nothing to write home about. While the viewing angles are decent and colours are punchy, the maximum brightness level is not enough, and text and images appear fuzzy due to the HD+ resolution, which is a bit low for a screen of this size.
First-party applications are built to accommodate the notch, and EMUI allows you to stretch third-party applications that do not natively support the 19:9 aspect ratio.
Honor 8C performance, software, and battery life
Performance is a bit of a mixed bag. The smartphone handles day-to-day use quite well but struggles a bit when pushed. We also experienced slight lag and stutter while navigating around the UI and scrolling through heavy websites in Chrome. As the Honor 8C is the first smartphone with the Snapdragon 632 SoC, it's hard to say whether the performance issues are a result of this processor or a lack of optimisation on Honor's part.
Games like Asphalt 9 and PUBG exhibited a few dropped frames here and there, but were playable on the whole. You will need to reduce the graphics settings though. The Honor 8C managed 103,258 points in AnTuTu, 1265 and 2465 respectively in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests, 5,673 in PC Mark's Work 2.0 benchmark, 14fps in GFXBench Manhattan 3.1, and 36fps in GFXBench T-Rex.
Face recognition is almost instantaneous when there's an adequate amount of light, but you do need to point the smartphone directly at your face. In low light, the phone increases the screen brightness so as to illuminate your face before attempting to scan it, and this helps to a degree. We also found the fingerprint sensor to be quick and accurate.
The Honor 8C runs Honor's EMUI 8.2 custom skin atop Android 8.1 Oreo. EMUI is feature-packed but feels cluttered and has plenty of bloatware. There's an odd mix of Google's own apps and Honor's as default. For example, there's the Chrome browser and Android's default messaging app, but the Dialer, File Manager and Gallery are Honor's custom versions. Facebook, Messenger, Netflix, and Camera 360 come preinstalled, along with a bunch of first-party apps from Huawei such as HiCare, Huawei Health, Themes, Honor Store, and Honor Club, which require a ton of permissions to run.
On a positive note, EMUI also has a one-handed mode, a powerful theming engine, and the ability to run two instances of the same application. There is no information as of now regarding any potential Android P update for this phone.
The Honor 8C lasted 14 hours and 30 minutes in our HD video battery loop test, which is quite impressive. Real-world performance was solid as well, with the smartphone powering through a day of moderate use. EMUI has a host of power-saving features, one of which reduces the screen resolution when you're running low on power. The smartphone does not support quick charging, and takes more than two and a half hours to charge fully when using the included 10W charger.
Honor 8C cameras
On the imaging front, the Honor 8C features a 13-megapixel primary rear camera with an aperture of f/1.8, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4. At the front, the Honor 8C has an 8-megapixel fixed-focus camera with an aperture of f/2.0. Both the front and rear cameras feature single-LED flashes.

The iOS-inspired camera app is well laid out and has a fully featured Pro mode, which allows you to alter the ISO, exposure, shutter speed, and white balance. The smartphone can recognise certain objects or scenes being shot, and optimise image settings accordingly. At the moment, the smartphone can detect 22 different types of objects and over 500 types of scenes. We were not too pleased with the AI enhancements on offer. Most photos shot in AI mode were oversharpened and had oversaturated colours. With AI turned off, photos taken in adequate light had more natural colours and a reasonable amount of detail. The wide aperture mode allows you take shots with depth-of-field effects, which are above average with decent edge detection. However, the image quality is a bit behind the competition.
In unfavourable lighting situations, the photos we took with this phone came out looking dark and murky, and the autofocus also struggled at times. The AI enhancements can help the app set itself to pull in more light, but the level of detail suffers and plenty of noise creeps in.
The front camera is also just about adequate. In our experience, most images were soft and overexposed. Low-light performance was also quite poor. The front LED flash helps to an extent, but images lack detail, are over-sharpened, and have inaccurate colours. A beauty mode is available for both the front and rear cameras, but the results appear very artificial. AR stickers are also supported, and these are well implemented. Video recording maxes out at 720p for the front camera while the rear one is capable of 1080p recording. Our test videos lacked detail and were shaky due to the lack of any sort of stabilisation.
Verdict The Honor 8C does little to stand out in a segment populated by highly competent smartphones such as the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 (Review) and Nokia 5.1 Plus (Review). Honor has tried to deliver a solid all-rounder, but in doing so, has produced a phone that does not excel in any particular area.
This phone does not look or feel as premium as its rivals. Its low-light camera quality is disappointing, general performance is a mixed bag, and the user interface is cluttered. There are a few spots of sunshine - the battery life is solid, there's a dedicated microSD card slot, and the fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate. Manufacturers including Xiaomi, Nokia, Asus, and Realme have raised the budget smartphone game, and Honor needs to do more if it wants to come out on top.

Facebook rolls out Reactions for its Lite app, intros camera effects designed for Indian users
Facebook rolls out Reactions for its Lite app, intros camera effects designed for Indian users
India is currently the fastest growing Internet market across the globe and Facebook considers the nation a burgeoning asset for its social networking platform. It has already amassed about 2 billion users internationally, which a rather massive monthly active user base but it still sees a lot of scope in the Indian market.
At its “Facebook: A Place to Connect” event organized in New Delhi, the social media giant announced that more than 184 million monthly active users are now using the platform in India. This is a notable figure considering only a quarter (meaning 300 million) people of our massive 1.3 billion population are connected to the internet. It has also been revealed that 50 percent of these users access Facebook every day — no standalone stats for the main and Lite app.
Talking about the same in an official statement, Facebook writes,
India is a very important country to Facebook, and we’re proud to have more than 184 million monthly active people in India who use Facebook to connect with their friends and family and to build supportive communities online and offline.
Starting off with Facebook Lite, this data-saving and mobile-focused replica of the social network was launched back in 2015. Over the past year, as per statistics shared by the company, the app has made its way to more than 200 million users spanning across 150 countries. And it counts India as one of the top countries where Facebook Lite has literally taken off.
Thus, the social media has today decided to bring the Lite mobile app a step closer to the experience provided on the core application. It has debuted the popular Reactions feature, which had previously been under beta testing to the Facebook Lite app. This means you will now have more options — which include Love, Haha, Wow, Sad and Angry — to react to the posts appearing on your timeline. The company also shared an insight saying that the Reactions feature has been used over 300 million times, Love making up for half of its total reactions.
Facebook, for those unaware, has steadily been porting over features from its widely popular competitor Snapchat into each one its product offerings. It has baked in the Stories features into every app, ranging from Instagram and Messenger to even WhatsApp. It has not only copied the concept but also specific features, the most prominent one being filters and face masks. It has released these camera effects for every user globally but is now introducing some local India-specific filters as well.
Announced at the New Delhi event, the users of Facebook in India will not only be able to access the camera effects already present within the app. They will now also be able to express themselves with new custom filters, such as the expression of Namaste or geo-specific experiences for Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, and other places. And now with the announcement of the AR-focused Camera Effects platform announced at the F8 developer conference, you should be looking forward to even immersive experiences.
The conference revolved around Facebook’s new-found vision, described in Zuckerberg’s lengthy 6000-word manifesto, of moving beyond connecting people to now building a community on their platform. It not only talked about new features or product releases but also showcased how users can indulge in numerous community-led efforts to increase engagement. The event also shed a light on other products owned by Facebook such as Live, 360 Photos, Groups, Events, Oculus, Instagram, and WhatsApp among others.
With regards to the same, it has already revealed that a social gathering of-sorts will be organized for Facebook Group admins at the Communities Summit later in June this year. This will entirely be focused on Facebook groups or community members, who’re out there building a community to reduce hate, abuse and help those in need. The social media giant will be unveiling new AI-powered tools, along with other solutions to help admins better manage the groups and increase interaction.
